| Are any of your
students considering dentistry or other health-related
careers? Point them to LifeWorks, a Web site
sponsored by the National Institutes of Health (NIH)
Office of Science Education.
LifeWorks
was created for middle and high school students. It
features information on more than 100 medical science and
health careers. Students can search for careers by title,
education required, interest area, or salary. They can
also use the "Career Finder" feature to build lists of
careers especially suited for their skills and interests.
The site also
features profiles of people already working in many types
of medical-science careers. Those profiled include three
dentists, a dental hygienist, dental laboratory
technician, dental assistant, prosthodontist, and oral
surgeon. They explain why they chose their career, their
typical workday, educational requirements, and what they
like most and least about their job.
Health-related
occupations are projected to be among the fastest growing
over the next 10 years. However, the NIH notes that many
students don't know the range of health and medical
science careers available to them. It developed this
interactive Web site to:
- Help students
assess their interests, skills, aptitudes, and job
expectations.
- Match
students' personal characteristics with compatible
careers.
- Provide
detailed occupational information such as the nature of
the work, working conditions, occupational outlook,
education and training requirements, earnings, related
occupations, and common career ladders.
