Link Found Between Obesity, Gum Disease

Here's yet another reason to help students develop healthy lifestyles. A recent study found that adult obesity is a significant predictor for periodontal disease.

The reason seems related to the degree of insulin resistance. Researchers from the University of Buffalo found that periodontal disease increased in severity in proportion to increased insulin resistance.

The research team also found that diabetics with periodontal disease are more likely to die from complications such as cardiovascular disease and kidney complications than diabetics with little or no periodontal disease.

The study was published in a recent supplement to the Journal of Periodontology.

"The presence of periodontal infection combined with obesity may contribute to type 2 diabetes and its complications, such as coronary heart disease," said Dr. Kenneth A. Krebs, president of the American Academy of Periodontology.
