NIH Offers Oral Health Classroom Materials for Grades 1-2

The National Institutes of Health has developed a learning module called "Open Wide and Trek Inside!" Designed for grades 1 and 2, the module focuses on the science of the oral environment and major scientific concepts relating to oral health.

The program features:

  • Stories and games that teach about the structures and functions of the mouth
  • Hands-on experiments to investigate the process of tooth decay
  • Play acting and stories about bacteria's role in decay
  • Interactive games and stories to identify healthy behaviors

A complete 175-page teacher's guide is available to download from the Internet. The teacher's guide contains all of the material needed for the classroom lessons, including background and masters and transparencies. There is also a Web version, which includes multimedia activities for students.
