The National Maternal & Child Oral Health Resource Center notes that there is a strong link between oral health and a child's ability to learn. The organization produced a fact sheet called
Oral Health and Learning: When Children's Oral Health Suffers, So Does Their Ability to
Learn.
Among the findings from this fact sheet:
- Children suffering from toothaches and other oral health problems score lower on average on tests than children who don't suffer from tooth pain.
- Children with chronic dental pain are unable to focus, are easily distracted, and may have problems with completing schoolwork. Their schoolwork may deteriorate, which may affect their self-esteem.
- Once children with acute dental problems receive the care they need, their school performance and attendance generally improve.
