NAIC Launches Consumer Education Site
With the goal of helping consumers better understand how to make smart decisions about insurance, the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) launched a comprehensive public education program.
Called “Insure U,” the program is designed to help consumers understand insurance as their needs change at different life stages, and to educate them about how to avoid being duped by fake insurance companies. The Insure U program is available online at www.insureUonline.org.
Recent consumer research conducted by the NAIC pointed to the need for more consumer education. Examples of such findings include:
-
More than half of respondents in established families did not understand the terms under COBRA that allow them to choose to continue health coverage under their old employer’s policy if they leave a job.
-
Less than half (45%) of consumers are suspicious of insurance policies that cost significantly less than other policies with comparable coverage. This is the number one warning sign associated with illegal or fake insurance operations.
In addition to the online education site, the Insure U program also includes public service announcements.
