The National
Flossing Council (NFC) is an all-volunteer organization
dedicated to promoting floss and flossing. It spreads
the word through its Web site, www.flossing.org
where you'll find more information than you ever dreamed
about flossing.
Its tone is
definitely tongue-in-cheek.
The NFC's motto
is "Help Spread Peace of Mouth." "Understanding 'peace
of mouth' is simple," says NFC president Dr. Armand
Lione. "Peace of mouth is something like peace of mind,
only not as profound. A life without dental distress is
one that includes 'peace of mouth.' Although there are
many routes to this inner (oral) peace, we believe that
flossing is an important peace-keeping tool."
The NFC
periodically awards its "Flossy" award to celebrities
who promote flossing. Past winners include comedian
Jerry Seinfeld and talk-show host Ellen DeGeneres. The
NFC's Web site includes excerpts from DeGeneres' book
The Funny Thing Is., where she writes humorously
about the impact of flossing on her life.
The site also
features floss art, unusual public service ads about
flossing, and haiku about flossing. |
