Consumer-driven Health Plans Take Page from Dental Playbook
Dental benefits plans decades ago pioneered the concept of consumer-driven cost control, in which patients manage their own expenses to reduce utilization costs. Now, health benefits plans are looking at the dental benefits model, which focuses on preventive and early-treatment procedures and away from expensive cures and restorations. For more on how this approach has kept dental benefits costs low while improving the oral health of employees, read on.

Preventing Periodontal Disease
Periodontal disease, also known as gum disease, is caused by destructive bacteria found in built-up plaque. To learn more about the disease, the risk factors and how to prevent it, read more.
House Passes AHP Legislation; Senate Unlikely to Act
The U.S. House of Representatives approved for the second time a bill allowing small businesses to band together to purchase health insurance through federally regulated association health plans (AHPs). However, opposition to the bill remained high in part because Delta Dental and its more than 1,000 coalition partners, including the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association, the National Governors Association and the National Association of Insurance Commissioners launched a Web-based grassroots effort aimed at key members of the House. The Senate is unlikely to act. For more on this and other Capitol Hill news, read on.
DeltaUSA Posts Dramatic Growth
DeltaUSA, the affiliate with which Delta Dental administers national dental benefits accounts, posted a 46.4% increase in primary subscribers during the 12-month period ending in January 2004. The growth is attributed in part to the strength of the dental network. For more about this increase, read on.
Largest Dental Benefits Carrier Still Growing
Delta Dental has remained unchallenged as the largest dental benefits carrier and today covers more than 45 million people in more than 76,000 employer groups. To see how we've grown, read on.
